Ben Affleck's initial version of The Batman film had a lot of similarities to James Bond movies, says director Matt Reeves. In 2013, Warner Bros. launched their own superhero franchise with Henry Cavill as Superman. Three years later, the DCEU introduced its Caped Crusader played by Affleck, who made his first outing in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Despite initial doubts about Affleck's ability to bring one of the most iconic DC heroes to life, the actor's performance and new take on Batman in the 2016 Zack Snyder film was widely praised. Affleck then appeared in Justice League with the promise of more outings to come, including his solo film as the Dark Knight. Unfortunately, those plans were scrapped after Affleck decided to exit The Batman project, resulting in Reeves coming in to take over. The director then reworked The Batman, removing its wider DCEU connections and focussing the film on a younger iteration of the Caped Crusader, played by Robert Pattinson.

Now that the DCEU-separate The Batman has been out for several months, Reeves has opens up about passing up on the version of the film that Affleck originally co-wrote, and was supposed to star in. Speaking on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, the filmmaker revealed that while he enjoyed Affleck's Batman script, he didn't «connect» to the movie as a filmmaker. However, Reeves did explained that Affleck's original Batman project was going to have a lot of action set pieces reminiscent of James Bond films. Read his full quote below:
