Firefly lead Nathan Fillion opens up about his experience with Joss Whedon on set and whether or not he would work with the director again. The sci-fi adventure series came out in 2002 and ran for just one season before meeting an untimely cancellation. However, it quickly became a cult sensation. Creator Whedon followed it up with the 2005 film Serenity, which was the last time the world saw Mal (Fillion) and his crew. While it may be too late for a Firefly revival, fans have been clamoring for new content for years.
The idea of a reboot or sequel seemed even less likely after a series of accusations against Whedon emerged, beginning in 2020. Justice League star Ray Fisher alleged that Whedon displayed abusive and racist behavior during the film's extensive reshoots after the director took over the project after Zack Snyder left for personal issues. A bevy of actors and crew members defended Fisher, with him later being backed up with further allegations by costar Gal Gadot and Buffy the Vampire Slayer regular Charisma Carpenter. The actresses recounted their accounts of abusive and misogynistic experiences at the filmmaker's hands, for which Whedon ultimately made excuses.
