After going dark for almost a year, Ghost Recon Frontline has popped back up, but only because Ubisoft has cancelled it.
The latest financial report from Ubisoft primarily focused on the company’s recent sales successes and its plans for the rest of 2022 and beyond. The chief detail being that its Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora game now won’t release till either next year or 2024.
One thing it failed to mention, however, was that Ubisoft has also cancelled four of its projects; one of them being Ghost Recon Frontline, a free-to-play spin-off that would’ve offered a ‘new take on the battle royale genre.’
In retrospect, this isn’t too surprising. When it was announced last October, it was met with a massive backlash and criticism from fans, who clearly had no interest in a Ghost Recon battle royale game. Not to mention this was all Ubisoft had for the series’ 20th anniversary celebration.
Ubisoft planned to hold a closed test for it but, barely over a week after the announcement, it postponed it indefinitely and hasn’t talked about the game again until recently.
Its overwhelming unpopularity likely played a hand in its cancellation (its announcement trailer now has over 38,000 dislikes), although naturally Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed that.
As for the other three cancelled games, two of them hadn’t been announced yet, while the fourth was the Splinter Cell VR game announced in 2020 for the Oculus Quest 2.
No details were shared about it at the time and, much like Ghost Recon Frontline, there have been zero updates on it since. It was also announced alongside an Assassin’s Creed VR game, which is likely still in development.
