Marvel’s Wonder Man show reveals how Marvel is answering the problem with Joss Whedon’s Avengers approach. He delivered not one, buttwo $1 billion box office hits. However, The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron proved to be the extent of Marvel’s relationship with the director.
There was a time when it seemed that Whedon would lead the way for the MCU for years to come, but those days have long since ended. While Whedon was a huge part of what made the Avengers franchise the success that it is today, Marvel has moved on from Whedon with new directors. At this point in the MCU’s lifetime, Marvel has managed to build a universe jam-packed with superheroes. When Whedon made The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel had only about a dozen characters associated with the team available to them, and now the MCU is bristling with Marvel Comics Avengers, including Monica Rambeau, Black Knight, She-Hulk, and even obscure characters like U.S. Agent. Marvel is now set to add one more to the list with Wonder Man, a show overseen by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton.

The decision to adapt Wonder Man reflects how different Marvel’s MCU plan is from Whedon’s. After making The Avengers, Whedon was asked about which members of the Avengers he would like to use in future movies. Whedon claimed he wanted to use “pretty much everyone but Wonder Man”. Whedon said that he “never did figure out what he was for”. Whedon was dismissive of the team’s Hollywood superhero, whereas Marvel Studios obviously has a completely different opinion.
