Despite a challenging and abusive upbringing, Sookie Stackhouse is an unworldly, naïve young woman in True Blood season 1. Kind, caring, and sometimes trusting to the point of gullibility, Sookie (Anna Paquin) radiates innocence and simplicity. These aspects of Sookie’s character make it easy to underestimate her age at the beginning of the series.
True Blood ran from 2008 to 2014, exploring the consequences of a new synthetic blood product called TruBlood, that allows vampires to come out of the shadows and publicly enter society. Over the course of seven seasons and 81 episodes of True Blood, Sookie’s adventures gradually make her a little more worldly-wise. The inexperienced waitress working at Merlotte’s Bar and Grill in Bon Temps, Louisiana never becomes jaded or cynical despite arguably having every right to be. However, she develops a growing consciousness about who she is and the machiavellian schemes playing out around her. Despite her fey ancestry, she gets physically older too.

When True Blood began, Sookie (played by Canadian-born New Zealand actress Anna Paquin) was twenty-five years old. According to the TV show, she was born on May 24th, 1983. The books by Charlaine Harris have a slightly earlier setting and a different timeline. The thirteen novels that make up The Southern Vampire Mysteries suggest that Sookie was born on July 1st, 1979. That isn’t the only difference between the TV series and the books, as some character roles were changed to fit the writing team's vision for the series.
