Despite being unable to pet the dog, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now the highest-rated game on Open Critic and one of the top five games on Metacritic. It has also just enjoyed the biggest launch of a Zelda game in franchise history.
That’s according to UK boxed sales data (courtesy of Games Industry.biz), which puts Tears of the Kingdom well ahead of the competition. Tears of the Kingdom outsold Breath of the Wild by almost three times, giving it the top spot for Zelda release sales. Twilight Princess is now bumped to second place while Ocarina of Time sits in third. Tears of the Kingdom is also now the eighth best-selling Zelda game of all time even after just a few days, outselling physical units of Skyward Sword and the Wind Waker.

Tears of the Kingdom didn’t have quite enough oomph to unseat Pokemon Scarlet & Violet from its top spot of highest-selling Switch launch of all time, at least in terms of unit sales, but it did beat Scarlet & Violet in terms of revenue. Tears of the Kingdom sold 12 percent fewer units but generated eight percent more revenue thanks to a special limited edition version which was is priced at £100.
And while everyone is talking about Tears of the Kingdom sales of Breath of the Wild also saw a bump as fans purchased the prequel in anticipation for the sequel.
Tears of the Kingdom is also the top UK game of 2023 in terms of physical sales, beating out Hogwarts Legacy by more than 50 percent. Keep in mind that Hogwarts was released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, but also that these platforms typically have way more digital sales nowadays than physical ones.
