Tales of Kenzaru: ZAU is an action adventure platformer that was announced during The Game Awards. The game is about dealing with loss with the themes of the story drawn from Abubakar Salim’s, founder of Surgent Studios, own experience of life after losing his father. Tales of Kenzaru: ZAU is a roguelike too, so there will be challenges to overcome.
“For a long time, I’ve struggled to find a way of communicating my journey with grief. To now be able to do that through Zau’s story of loss, growth and healing in Tales of Kenzera: ZAU feels so right,” said Abubakar Salim. “Games, to me, are the most powerful medium to share stories. My late father introduced me to the medium, and what better way of honoring him, our relationship and love than through this experience? I am extremely grateful and proud of the team of creatives that have helped craft Surgent Studios, and I’m beyond thrilled to have EA Originals give me the platform and space to share this story together with them.”
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU takes its inspiration from Bantu tales, featuring mystical creatures, memories of shamans, and spirits. As you can see from the trailer, Zau can switch between powers thanks to the two masks he wields. Those are the Sun and Moon masks. The Moon mask allows players to manipulate time and crystalise enemies, while the Sun Mask is more weapons based by using blazing spears.
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will be released on April 23rd, 2024 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.
