Capcom is on a bit of a roll this year, as they’ve launched not one but three successful AAA titles across three different IPs, and they’re all doing well in one form or another. Proving that it doesn’t matter if you’re killing zombies, dinosaurs, or fighting against friends; if you make a good game, people will buy it. But in many ways, Street Fighter 6 was the title that Capcom needed to succeed the most. After all, the previous entry in the franchise is easily its most controversial, and the team had to work hard to reassure fans they knew how to fix things.
Thankfully, they did just that. The game had a hot launch in June and stands as one of the best-reviewed video games of the year! Due to that, Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto sat down with Inside Games to talk about the launch and how they felt about everything that went down.
For example, the producer, at the time, couldn’t believe that it had been a month since the game was released:
“We’ve just been riding the wave so the feeling is “Huh, it’s been a month already?”, honestly. That feeling of “We finally hit release date” has never really hit, we’ve just been pushing forward with full fervor, in a good way.”
The director backed that up by stating the team has been working on this game ever since 2018, and they’ve worked hard to reach this launch and make it as great as possible. To that end, the director noted that the reaction to the game has been far greater than the last entry.
“Street Fighter 6 seems to have been a trigger for a lot of people to feel “Maybe I should try out fighting games”. I also go into the Battle Hub when I get home after work and I just watch the flourishing lobby while smiling.”
