Xbox and Undead Labs produced a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. It was cinematic, but promised an ambitious sequel.
The trailer for State of Decay 3 is keen to ramp up the emotional side of surviving in a world of the undead. After all, watching people become rotting husks isn’t exactly a pleasant experience. It’ll be interesting to see if the final game conveys this or if it’s a bit of tonal subterfuge in the vein of that infamous Dead Island trailer.
The game’s world is now years into the apocalypse, with an evolving zombie threat taking over the landscape. You must fight back and reclaim lost ground, carving out a life for your community of survivalist homesteaders. Fans of the series might pick up on nods to some franchise staples in the new trailer: brutal combat; cooperatively battling back threats to the survivor group; permadeath; opening a car door on a zombie while speeding down the road. But the more you watch it, the more you can see hints at how State of Decay 3 will be the most ambitious game Undead Labs has ever envisioned.
It’s been six years since State of Decay 2 launched, so understandably, fans are getting itchy (tasty) for another bite of the open-world zombie franchise.
There is no State of Decay 3 release date at present, but it will launch on Xbox Game Pass.
