Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield had a successful showing after this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, detailing various systems like character creation, space combat, and more. However, while there is an extensive system for creating and customizing a spaceship, what about vehicles for exploring the game’s 1000-plus planets?
Speaking to Kinda Funny Games, director Todd Howard revealed that there was none, not even wild creatures that could act as mounts. “There is not. We’ve seen this with our other games, where we want to design it so it feels good on foot. But we do have the Boost Pack.
“You saw some of that in the video, and you have the skills for the Boost Pack. So the Boost Pack almost acts like this vehicle. Super fun, where you can fly through, and then the low gravity planets are really, really something special in the game.”
The Boost Pack was seen throughout Starfield Direct as players hovered over enemies in combat. However, the upgrades that could make it a bonafide vehicle for exploration have yet to be revealed. We’ll need to wait for more details, but worse comes worse, the player’s spaceship should work (as in No Man’s Sky before Exocraft).
Starfield launches on September 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC. It runs at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X/S and has the “fewest bugs” of any Bethesda title yet, per Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty. Head here for more details.
