Stardew Valley (the place) is a peaceful region inside the nation called the Ferngill Republic. Within Stardew Valley is Pelican Town, which is the main area that you'll play in (outside your farm and some other areas). South of Pelican Town is the Gem Sea, which contains the Fern Islands archipelago, which itself contains Ginger Island.
Across the Gem Sea is the Gotoro Empire, a nation at war with the Ferngill Republic. When Kent returns in Year 2, you'll learn that he fought in that war. Additionally, the traveling cart lady will mention that she smuggles her goods out of the Gotoro Empire.
