The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie got a new teaser at CinemaCon, revealing a new look for the returning villain, Eggman. While the clip hasn't been made public yet, multiple attendees report that Eggman has put on some weight, putting him more in line with his appearance in the games.
As spotted by Screen Rant, the teaser shows that Jim Carrey's Eggman has gained weight since the events of Sonic 2. This follows on from the first two films, which have shown Eggman progressively starting to look more and more like his video game counterpart. Now, it looks like the threequel will continue this trend, as Eggman hunts down Shadow.
Looking at the reactions to this news online, it's safe to say that fans are pleased with this direction:
Screen Rant also notes that the teaser suggests the film is making a departure from the games, as it shows Sonic and friends finding Shadow before Eggman. It's unclear how this will play out then, as in Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman is the one to unfreeze Shadow, putting him at odds with the blue blur. Of course, it's possible that the two hedgehogs will still duke it out as soon as they see one another, and that this change just speeds up their introduction.
We already know that the film has cast actress Alyla Browne to play Maria, a central character in Shadow's backstory. Of course, as any fan knows, she has to die to propel Shadow's story forward, but we still don't know if the film will take the route of having her shot and killed by a GUN soldier. It might be a bit much for a kid's film premiering around the holiday season, after all.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to hit theatres on December 20, 2024. Before that, we have the Knuckles show, which is premiering on April 26 via Paramount Plus, giving us our first new adventure with this version of the Sonic crew since the last film in 2022.
