Is it finally happening? Is Skull & Bones actually going to get released? Ubisoft has announced that Skull & Bones has a new release date of 16th February 2024. To mark the announcement, Ubisoft has released a gameplay deep dive trailer to delve into the many aspects of this piratical adventure.
Yes, Skull & Bones finally has a firm release date, and if it holds, then it looks like it will just about hit the most recent target of coming out before April 2024 – though Ubisoft had hoped to get the game out in 2023. Ubisoft held some closed beta tests back in the summer, which seemed to indicate that the game was on track for release, but there was still time for one last delay. Hopefully, it’s just the one.
Skull & Bones is a multiplayer sea combat game, making use of similar technology to the sea-based Assassin’s Creed IV as it was originally intended as an expansion for Black Flag. It’s been in development since 2013, has been repeatedly over budget, and should have originally launched in 2018.
Ubisoft will hold one last closed beta test for Skull & Bones from 15th to 18th December, after which it’s full steam ahead – uh, except these are sail boats – to the launch in February. As is pretty common, there’s a pre-order bonus of getting three days early access to the live service game on 13th February with the Premium Edition or by subscribing to Ubisoft+, but general admissions come on the 16th.
There’s still seemingly some excitement for the game, not least due to the continuing success of Assassin’s Creed – AC Mirage did pretty well, and AC Nexus VR has been well received – and the special place so many gamers have in their hearts for Black Flag.
