Good news everyone, Sega has seen the light and halted development of blockchain games. They had previously been very interested in the technology and were motoring ahead with plans despite clear evidence that gamers did not want those sort of titles.
Have they listened to the players? Well no, they are halting their plans because the crypto currency market collapsed from record highs and shows little sign of recovery. That’s not stopped Co-Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi from criticising “play to earn” games, “What’s the point if games are no fun?”
However, Sega will still license lesser known characters for NFT’s and will participate in developing blockchain titles with external companies, again with their smaller franchises.
Japanese counterpart Square Enix are, as far as we know, still ploughing ahead with blockchain games. Last July a blockchain console was announced called Polium One. According to their roadmap they should have a functioning prototype by now but their website has not been updated since the console was announced.
More recently, Nike and EA Sports announced a partnership that “will look to build new immersive experiences and unlock brand new levels of customization within the EA SPORTS ecosystem. In future EA SPORTS titles, EA SPORTS and Nike plan to make select .SWOOSH virtual creations available allowing members and players unique new opportunities for self-expression and creativity through sport and style.”
Or to put it another way, you will be able to buy NFT’s of virtual trainers to wear in EA Sports games.
