All this debacle surrounding Unity’s upcoming Runtime Fee has caused a major stir, especially among developers. This includes none other than Facepunch Studios, best known for Garry’s Mod and the brutal survival game Rust.
In a statement on Garry Newman’s (not that one) blog, the founder of Facepunch has outright said that Unity can now “get f*cked.” This alone pretty much spells out how most people feel about what’s going on with the popular game engine at the moment.

Newman expands on this by saying that there’s trust has now been broken between Unity and pretty much every developer that uses its toolkit. The post then concludes by saying: “Rust 2 definitely won’t be a Unity game”
It’s difficult to not take this as an off-the-cuff way of confirming that Rust 2 is in the pipeline. It could well have just been Newman letting off some steam by saying that any future projects will not be utilizing Unity products.
As such, we can’t say for definite whether a Rust follow-up is in development. It could well be that Facepunch Studios is looking to do a sequel of its popular PvP/PvE/PvLE (Player vs. Literally Everything – that one’s mine) title. We’ll have to just keep an eye on whether this gets elaborated on in the future.
The general takeaway from Newman’s post is that nobody is happy with the direction Unity is currently heading in. Seemingly, the reasons are obvious to everyone but Unity itself.
