NetherRealm Studios promised a hard reboot of the franchise in Mortal Kombat 1. While it’s clear the characters, story, and environments have all received updates, the developer also keeps what worked in previous games, refusing to tinker with the heart and soul of the title. Many villains from the previous games have fully fleshed out backstories here – at times, they are tragic figures who become what they are because of their horrible circumstances – and they are presented with an opportunity to do what’s right here. Some of them do, while others don’t; however, keep a close eye on the likes of Baraka and Reptile, who are given a lot of time to shine in this story.
