Mortal Kombat 1 might have changed Scorpion from Hanzo Hazashi to Kuai Liang, but it hasn't gotten rid of the original character completely
and has actually given him a whole new origin.
Since the very first reveal trailer, one of the biggest talking points for Mortal Kombat 1 is regarding the identity of Scorpion. Fans speculated that he wasn't Hanzo Hazashi in this universe like he was in the rest of the series and was in fact Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero, something that was eventually confirmed to be the case by the game's story director.

Scorpion's identity being swapped has seen a mixed response from Mortal Kombat fans, mostly due to them worrying that it has completely erased Hanzo Hazashi from this timeline. Thankfully, that isn't the case as, while he may not make an appearance during the game's story mode, he does show up elsewhere in Mortal Kombat 1. As has been the case in previous Mortal Kombat games, finishing a run of the Tower mode as any of the playable characters rewards you with a unique ending. What's different this time around is that they all seem to be canon to the main story, rather than the wild endings that we got in previous games.
A lot of these endings are pretty interesting, but it's Smoke's that takes the cake as the best of them all. Smoke's ending sees him setting out to form the Shirai Ryu with Scorpion, but struggling to find anyone worthy of joining the clan. That is until Smoke finds himself being attacked by a young boy, who he presumes to be an assassin but is actually just a scared warrior
