Margaret and Doug are two characters from the previous game that players can unlock in Rune Factory 5 by linking data from Rune Factory 4. For this to happen, players need to own both Rune Factory 4 and5 on their Nintendo Switch. As Rune Factory 5 only recently got a port on the PC through Steam, it is not clear if unlocking Margaret and Doug is possible on anything other than the Switch.
Margaret and Doug were marriageable characters in Rune Factory 4, but are not eligible in Rune Factory 5. However, because of their popularity, they became unlockable characters when players link their save data from RF4 to their game in RF5. Once unlocked, Margaret and Doug function like any other normal villager NPC; players can raise friendship levels with them, give them gifts, and greet them daily.

To unlock Margaret and Doug, players simply need to be playing on a Nintendo account that has a Rune Factory 4 save file. When they begin a new game in Rune Factory 5, they will meet Margaret and Doug in the Blue Moon Inn.
Once players have both games on their Switch account, there will be Rune Factory 4 special data attached to the players' account. Open up the game and hit start, and players will be told that both Margaret and Doug will start appearing in Rigbarth. They will stay at the Blue Moon Inn, and do not wander around town. However, players can interact with them like any other villager. Margaret and Doug can also post requests on the Request Board, so players can earn rewards and unlock special items:
