Apple's transition to its custom M-series chips from Intel-based processors has proved to be quite a success for the company. The company is expected to release its third wave of upgrades for the chips next year, adopting TSMC's 3nm architecture for better CPU and GPU performance. However, Qualcomm is now working to directly compete against Apple with its new Snapdragon X series of chips which will offer enhanced computational and graphical performance.
Apple has almost completely transitioned to its custom Silicon and the latest product to adopt the M-series treatment is the new Mac Pro that Apple announced at its WWDC event earlier this year. Qualcomm has announced that its next-gen X series of chips will be designed for PCs and the first iteration will be seen next year. Qualcomm says that the new X series chips will be an "infection point for the PC industry all thanks to enhanced performance capabilities.
If Snapdragon's latest endeavor succeeds in making a mark as good as the Apple Silicon, it could pose serious competition to Intel as well as AMD. However, since we are only speculating on the performance at this point, it would be wise to reserve our judgments until the results are evident in tests. The Snapdragon X series will be built on the Qualcomm Oryon CPU based on technology brought forward by Nuvia. Nuvia was acquired by Qualcomm which builds in-house Arm-based chips. The chips are expected to deliver performance similar to Apple's M-series of chips.
The Snapdragon X chips will also feature better efficiency which will potentially bring a major boost to the battery life on Windows-powered laptops. Furthermore, some of the appealing elements of the chip include on-device AI processing for faster processing as
