The latest PlayStation 5 system software update is rolling out globally, adding support for Discord voice chat, variable refresh rate (VRR) at the 1440p resolution, and an improved way to sync save files from PS4 to PS5, and a new PSVR 2 game library filter.
This PS5 update went into beta testing at the start of February, and has seemingly passed all of Sony’s testing on its way to a full public release.
Discord voice chat is the banner feature for PlayStation 5 owners, opening the system up for cross-platform party chat with gamers on PC, mobile and Xbox. PS5 players will have to use the mobile app to select a chat and then transfer it to PS5. You can find some more details on how Discord PS5 support works here. Here’s hoping there’s deeper system level integration over time.
After that, there’s VRR support for the 1440p resolution, which is a boon for gamers that prefer to play on a PC gaming monitor, with many of these now targeting 1440p and higher refresh rates.
For game management, people upgrading from PS4 to PS5 consoles and versions of games will now be automatically notified if there’s a PS4 save file stored in the PS Plus cloud that can be imported, and for VR gamers, there’s new PSVR and PSVR 2 filters for the game library.
