One of the oldest theories still being discussed in the community surrounds a unique relationship between the mythical Pokémon Mew and the shapeshifting Ditto. The community has crafted countless theories over the years, with a passionate fanbase drawing connections between many concepts that may or may not be coincidences. While Mew and Ditto seem quite different from each other on the surface, they actually share some surprising connections.
All Pokémon have characteristics that distinguish them from the rest, but Mew and Ditto have some of the most unusual aspects. Mew, as the ancestor to all Pokémon, is believed to contain the genetic material of every Pokémon, allowing it to transform into any other Pokémon. Ditto is known for the same transformation ability and is the only Pokémon other than Mew known to inherently have such an ability. Mew’s unique backstory and Ditto’s strange features are what tease a thread for a potential link between the two Pokémon.

The theory connecting Mew and Ditto stipulates that during the DNA engineering process that ultimately created Mewtwo, more than one Pokémon was actually developed. Ditto, in turn, stems from one of these failed experiments. If access to the genetic material of all Pokémon is what allows Mew to transform, it stands to reason that Ditto could have gained the ability from the same lineage. The games have not specifically established any failed attempts at creating Mewtwo, but considering the nature of experiments, the idea is a very plausible one. It would explain Ditto’s nature more easily than other theories might.
