Players can pick any of the eight characters in the game to begin the story campaigns with and work through experiencing all but the final story in any order that they choose.
Reviews of 's remake on the Nintendo Switch generally consider it a very good game with unique gameplay mechanics and plot twists intertwined in the narratives. The story lets players experience settings in a prehistorical period, Imperial China, the Wild West, Medieval Europe, Edo Japan, the present day, the near future, and the distant future. A Square Enix classic title, its remake features a redone HD-2D style with atmospheric effects similar to what was used in the games.
will be released on Steam, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 on April 27, 2023, with pre-orders available now. will retail at $50, although there currently is a 20% discount on the game for PlayStation Plus members and all Steam users who pre-order. The discount on Steam will continue through May 11, and the PlayStation Plus discount will expire on the release date of April 27.

To allow prospective players a chance to try the game out before pre-ordering, there is a free playable demo available for both PlayStation and PC. This demo can be found on 's pages on the PlayStation Store and on Steam. Any progress made during the demo will be carried over into the full game
