A lucky Pokemonfan uncovered a rare treasure while cleaning out their closet recently: a special edition Pokemon Yellow Game Boy complete with a carrying case and a copy of the game itself. Decades before it graced the Nintendo Switch with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the Pokemon franchise took the world by storm on the original Game Boy. Pokemon Red and Blue were a breakout hit when they launched in the late 90s, inspiring a generation of children to “catch ‘em all” and spawning a mega-franchise that is still going strong to this day.
For the updated Game Boy Color handheld, Nintendo and developer Game Freak released Pokemon Yellow in 1998. While containing the same world and plot as the previous Red and Blue games, Pokemon Yellow made several changes to better emulate the popular Pokemon anime that was airing at the time — namely replacing the player’s Starter Pokemon with a Pikachu that followed them around and swapping out certain characters with their counterparts from the show. To celebrate the launch of Pokemon Yellow, a limited-edition Nintendo Game Boy was released that came with the game — and it sells for nearly $200 today.

Reddit user Mightydispread854 recently rediscovered their own copy of the special edition Pokemon Yellow Game Boy Color while cleaning out their old closet earlier this week, and soon shared an image of their find on r/gaming. The yellow Game Boy itself is adorned with cute images of Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Togepi, and is shown to be in solid condition. The Pokemon fan also found the Pokemon Yellow cartridge that came with it, as well as a special Pokemon-themed carrying case that is also in great condition. To see the full post, click here.
