Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is in negotiations to direct the Pokemon Detective Pikachu live-action sequel, according to Deadline. Former Late Show with Dave Letterman and The Kings of Summer writer Chris Galletta will handle the script for the follow-up to the 2019 box office hit.
The first Detective Pikachu starred Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the Pokemon mascot and Justice Smith, who can soon be seen in the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons movie. The film grossed more than $430 million at the global box office. It's unconfirmed at this time, but it is assumed that Reynolds will have some part to play in the upcoming sequel as his human character, Harry, returned back to his body after it was fused with Pikachu.
Over almost 30 years, Pokemon has become one of the most successful franchises and properties in the world. With more than 440 million video games sold worldwide, tens of billions of Pokemon cards shipped, and an animated series broadcasting in 177 countries, spanning 25 seasons--with a brand-new series on the way.
Krisel made a name for himself in the early 2010s having co-created, written for, and executive-produced Portlandia for IFC. He also co-created and wrote/directed the FX series Baskets, starring Zach Galifianakis. He's also written for Saturday Night Live and every single Tim and Eric Awesome Show production. This will be his first feature film.
