It seems the case of the missing Detective Pikachu sequel has finally been cracked. According to a report from Deadline, a sequel to Pokémon Detective Pikachu (that was the full title of the movie, even though nobody referred to it as that) is in active development at Legendary Entertainment.
The first Detective Pikachu film was adapted from the 3DS game of the same name and starred Ryan Reynolds as a sarcastic coffee-drinking and crime-solving Pikachu. The flick was arguably the first of a wave of actually-pretty-decent video game movies, paving the way for the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That said, despite racking up over $430 million at the box office – likely enough to make it profitable – we’ve heard little about a sequel. At one point, the movie’s co-star Justice Smith indicated it probably wasn’t going to happen.
It does seem like Detective Pikachu 2 may be somewhat of a fresh start for the franchise, as Legendary is reportedly eying Jonathan Krisel (co-creator of Portlandia and Baskets) to direct, replacing original director Rob Letterman. Meanwhile, the movie’s screenplay is reportedly being handled by former Letterman writer Chris Galletta, who replaces a five-person committee that contributed to the first movie’s script. No word on if Ryan Reynolds or any of the other cast members from the first movie will return.
The news that a Detective Pikachu 2 movie is moving ahead comes on the heels of hints that the announced Detective Pikachu 2 video game might not be far away. The LinkedIn profile of a Creatures Inc. (the developer of Detective Pikachu) employee mentioned the new game is “nearing release.” The most recent Pokemon Presents showcase came and went without an announcement,
