News of Amazon’s live action Tomb Raider show has been fluttering around the internet for quite a while but we now have the official confirmation of the series. The rather excellent Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to write and executive produce the series.
“If I could tell my teenage self that this was happening, I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
“I’m so happy to announce that we have ordered the epic, globetrotting series Tomb Raider from the incredibly gifted Emmy-award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the team at Crystal Dynamics,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “Fans and newcomers can look forward to exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character.”
The deal is between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon, and they are also working on a new multiplatform Tomb Raider game which will be created using Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics is currently part of the Embracer Group, but as they are selling off studios left, right, and centre who knows for how long. However, Tomb Raider is a massive franchise and Amazon will be paying Crystal Dynamics a lot of money for the license, so that probably keeps them safe from the Embracer clear out.
Amazon hit gold with their TV adaption of the Fallout franchise and will no doubt be hoping for a second strike with Tomb Raider. They certainly seem to be starting well, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is behind the excellent Fleabag television series and also starred in the most recent Indiana Jones movie and worked on the script for the same movie.
