Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag and an actor in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, confirmed in an interview with IGN that she is working on a Tomb Raider streaming series for Amazon's Prime Video. Waller-Bridge's involvement was previously reported back in January, stating that she will be responsible for scripting and executive producing the series based on the popular video game franchise.
Waller-Bridge has experience in the action-adventure genre, having worked on the script for the James Bond film No Time to Die and--in addition to appearing in the upcoming Indy movie--she also served as showrunner for Season 1 of Killing Eve, a spy-thriller series.
«There's so much I can incorporate,» Waller-Bridge said about her past experience and this upcoming project. «I mean, the character of Lara Croft was inspired by Indiana Jones and James Bond. So there's so much, and it just felt like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through this kind of franchise world.»
Waller-Bridge also mentioned her hope to maintain a sense of grounding amidst the grand action set-pieces, similar to what she observed in the Bond and Indiana Jones films. She also mentioned her aspiration to create a series that strikes a balance between comedy, heart, and grandeur.
«I love the idea of, as Steven Spielberg describes it, 'the greatest show on Earth,'» Waller-Bridge said. «As in, being able to make things with that scale and to go on adventures that big and for the comedy and the heart to be matched but on this kind of great, great level.»
As of now, the Tomb Raider streaming series is still in early development, and no details regarding casting, directing, or the premiere date have been announced.
