Weapon mods are one of the most fun elements of , and one in particular has a devastating effect that's a joy to unleash. Gunplay in Bethesda games has come a long way since the clunkier implementation of shooting in, with building on the extensive weapon mod system utilized by to enable exciting variety and customization. Many offer generally subtle tweaks, but others transform the game by rethinking the nature of standard firearms altogether in surprising and creative ways.
Weapon mods come in a number of categories, each corresponding to a different modular part of a firearm. Some, like Optic mods, provide simple and familiar sights and scopes, while various tweaks to parts like the barrel or grip can improve features like damage, stability, and accuracy. Perhaps the most interesting category is Magazine and Battery. Although expanded magazines are highly useful but vaguely uninteresting, some of the alternative options for the rounds themselves are, to put it simply, explosive.

The Hornet Nest mod may just be the most exciting ammo option in, providing explosive rounds that rain downward like artillery fire. This completely rethinks possibilities in combat, as aiming above the heads of enemies can work just as well as hitting them dead-on. Its power really starts to show when used over a wide target area, as firing high enough can spread the damage out much further than anything that would typically come out of the barrel of a handheld weapon. Getting used to its possibilities can require some recalibration, but it doesn't take long for the Hornet Nest mod to make standard guns feel boring by comparison.
