Camouflaj, Oculus Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and DC have officially announced Batman: Arkham Shadow, a brand-new entry in the beloved Arkham series that will release exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 in late 2024. Batman: Arkham Shadow will mark the second time that a virtual reality take on the Arkham series has been released.
Back in 2016, Rocksteady itself released Batman: Arkham VR, which served as a launch title for the PS4's original PlayStation VR headset and eventually made its way to other virtual reality platforms. Despite releasing a year after Batman: Arkham Knight hit store shelves, Batman: Arkham VR is set before the events of that game, and features Batman attempting to solve a murder. Batman: Arkham VR earned somewhat mixed reviews at the time of its release, but it still made great use of VR tech of the time and delivered a high-quality story.
Now the Batman: Arkham series is taking another crack at the VR space, with Batman: Arkham Shadow being developed by Oculus Studios and Camouflaj, the same studio that made the Iron Man VR game. Batman: Arkham Shadow will get a proper reveal on Friday, June 7 at 2:00pm PT at Summer Game Fest, but in the meantime, a brief teaser trailer has been released that may hint at what fans can expect from the Meta Quest 3 exclusive game.
The trailer itself doesn't give all that much away, but it shows Batman exploring the dark streets of Gotham at night. Batman is swarmed by a group of rats and has to use a smoke bomb to get away. The rats have glowing red eyes and definitely don't seem to be normal rats, so perhaps they are being controlled by the supervillain known as The Ratcatcher, aka Otis Flannagan, someone that hasn't really been properly featured in any previous Batman: Arkham games.
