Meta announced(Opens in a new window) Friday that it is rolling out new Facebook Reels features and expanding the maximum reel length from 60 to 90 seconds.
“Grooves”, one of the new features announced by the company, aligns and syncs the motion of a video to the beat of a song using visual beat technology. The tech is already employed by TikTok and was rolled out on Instagram reels last year.
A further new feature that’s already on Instagram permits Facebook users to create reels with trending templates. The move, which is similar to TikTok’s own templating feature, makes it possible for users to rip a template from a reel they’ve just watched and implement it in their own creation.
Instagram reels already max out at 90 seconds after an update in June last year. In recent months, Meta has been moving features that it already offers on its main platforms such as Poll, Quiz, and Emoji slider stickers over to Reels too. And in a move that was directed at professional content creators, the company rolled out tools(Opens in a new window) that allow users to generate short-form vertical Reels from Facebook or Instagram Live content.
In August, Meta allowed reel-makers to cross-post their reels on their Instagram and Facebook pages. Reels, which have been described as Meta’s answer to TikTok, are immensely popular across both Facebook and Instagram. As Engadget notes(Opens in a new window), the company says Reels is its fastest-growing format, with the number of reel plays reportedly more than doubling over the last year, which explains the rapid rollout of new features on the format.
Meanwhile, Meta is drastically cutting the price of its latest VR headset, the Quest Pro, to $999 from $1,499, effective March 5.
