Still, Marvel Comics can't make one of the most controversial storylines of its recent years, Superior Spider-Man, make sense. In Devil's Reign: Superior Four #3 it was revealed that Doctor Octopus' decision to make a bargain with Mephisto to «erase» his time as the Superior Spider-Man was actually the result of manipulation by an alternate version of himself, the Superior Octopus.
Peter Parker's apparent death in the Dying Wish story from Dan Slott, Humberto Ramos, Richard Elson, and Victor Olazaba was one of the biggest twists for Spider-Man since Civil War and One More Day. Many fans were not happy with Octopus taking over Peter's body, but the Superior Spider-Man era grew on readers and proved to be a breath of fresh air for Marvel's most iconic character. However, when it was time to bring back things to the status quo, the storyline proved to be too cumbersome, and Marvel found several ways to sweep it under the rug. Octopus does not in fact remember his time as the Superior Spider-Man, as this was the price to pay when he bargained with Mephisto in order to defeat the Norman Osborn of Earth-44145. This was Otto's decision, even if he wants to recover those memories and get back his «superior» body, or at least that's what readers thought.
