Apple’s Find My feature is a handy feature to help locate missing or stolen devices, such as AirPods. On this occasion, an owner of the wireless earbuds used a blend of technology and a little persistence to find out that the AirPods were actually in the ownership of an airport employee.
Alisabeth Hayden from visiting her husband from a trip to Tokyo. She accidentally left her jacket in the backseat of the plane, and when she attempted to retrieve it, the flight attendant did not give her permission, as it was required by federal law for passengers to get off the plane and stand beside it. Fortunately, the attendant did bring the jacket back, but after searching the pockets, she realized that the AirPods had gone missing.
“I realized before I was even off the plane. I was the third from last off the plane, so I asked the flight attendant if I could go and get it. He said no – I was required by federal law to get off the plane and stand beside it, where the strollers are brought to. I was tired, he said he’d bring it to me, I said OK.”
Using in-flight Wi-Fi to view the location of the AirPods, Hayden managed to track them to an area on the map called ‘United Cargo,’ which was off-limits for an airport passenger, and only an employee could access it. Eventually, the AirPods were tracked to a location in Bay Area, where they remained there for three days, concluding that these had been stolen.
Hayden decided to pursue the responsible route by emailing every United Airlines executive she could find through email. According to her, their response was least helpful, stating that her expensive belongings are now missing because she was denied permission to retrieve her jacket from the airplane.
