The Super Mario Bros. Movie's success shows no signs of slowing down, as it continues to break box office records in its third weekend. Amassing another $58 million at the US box office, it now holds the record for the most successful third weekend of any animated film, and helps it inch closer to its projected $1 billion mark.
It doesn't end there. According to The Wrap, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also become the most successful animated movie released after worldwide lockdowns forced theatres to close. It overtook Illumination's own Minions: The Rise of Gru for the honour, as Mario looks poised to become the studio's greatest success yet.

It's widely expected that the film will very comfortably reach the $1 billion milestone, which would be enough for it to overtake huge moneymakers such as Shrek 2, Finding Nemo, and Despicable Me 2. Once it's opened in Japan, it might even break into the top five, although it would have to beat Minions' $1.15 billion for that to happen.
The movie isn't just going after other animated films, however. It has also been pointed out that $58 million at the domestic box office is enough to make this the seventh-best third weekend of any film, of any medium. Not bad going for a series that was notorious for having one of the worst video game film adaptations of all time.
