When job hunting, the company hiring you is probably a top priority. But where it's located can play a big part in getting you the highest salary.
IT services provider Electric analyzed cybersecurity and IT job postings(Opens in a new window) to see what cities and states offer the highest and lowest salaries in those fields. Overall, those in cybersecurity have higher average salaries in San Jose, California ($148,000), San Francisco ($137,000), New York ($135,000), Austin ($134,000), and Seattle ($130,000).
Getting more granular, certain titles do better (or worse) in certain cities. New York is the best choice for cybersecurity analysts ($143,000), security engineers ($174,000), and junior security engineers ($167,000).
Texas cities are among the lowest-paying for many jobs: cybersecurity engineers ($85,000 in San Antonio), security engineers ($81,000 in Fort Worth), special agents with a cybersecurity/technology background ($78,000 in Houston), application security engineer ($113,000 in Fort Worth), and information security officers ($95,000 in Houston).
Only security analysts can expect to hit the top of the range for their profession in the Lone Star State, with an average salary of $135,000 in Austin.
IT support jobs in general pay the most in D.C. ($96,000), New York ($94,000), San Francisco ($92,000), San Jose ($90,000), and Los Angeles ($86,000). California comes out on top for salaries: for IT support technicians ($80,000 in San Jose), IT help desk technicians ($100,000 in Los Angeles), IT support engineers ($103,000 in San Francisco), and technology support analysts ($78,000 in San Francisco).
