Over six years since its release, Square Enix’s NieR: Automata continues to sell, achieving new milestones. The series’ official Twitter account confirmed the action RPG crossed 7.5 million in digital sales and cumulative shipments worldwide. Its last major figure was seven million units sold in November 2022.
NieR: Automata takes place several years after the first Nier and focuses on new characters. As 2B, an android for YoRHa, players must battle the Machines which have taken over Earth (forcing the remnants of humanity to the Moon). However, over time, secrets are revealed about the war, and characters begin questioning their motives in the face of it all.
Directed by Yoko Taro and developed by PlatinumGames, NieR: Automata is universally praised for its story-telling and themes, characterization, combat, soundtrack and aesthetic.
