Irish actor Brendan Gleeson (Alastor Moody in the Harry Potter films) has been cast in Joker 2 in an undisclosed role, according to Deadline. Production on Joker: Folie à Deux is expected to begin this December, and the film is slated to arrive in theaters on August 4, 2024.
Warner Bros. has not issued a comment regarding the new casting decision. It was also recently reported by Deadline that Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Atlanta) would be returning to reprise her role as Arthur Fleck/Joker's neighbor Sophie. In early August, it was finally confirmed that Lady Gaga has also been cast in the film--she is rumored to be playing Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
Phoenix will be earning a reported $20 million to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. And although we now have a title and release date, the movie's plot remains a mystery. The film has been rumored to be a musical.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joker's writer-director Todd Phillips may soon start serving as an advisor on future DC projects for Warner Bros. As for Phoenix, he will play Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott's Kitbag and he will star in Midsommar director Ari Aster's new movie, Disappointment Blvd.
Phillips is returning to direct Joker 2, from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. The pair co-wrote the original 2019 Joker.
Elsewhere in the franchise, former Batman Val Kilmer has had a change of heart and said in a recent email interview that he wants to once again play Batman and Bruce Wayne.
