Jacob Lofland (Aris in the Maze Runner franchise, Kendall Crowe in Justified) has become the latest addition in Joker: Folie à Deux's growing cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lofland will play an inmate at Arkham Asylum who will somehow be central to the plot and «develops a relationship with Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker.»
Lofland joins Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich, Capote)--who reportedly joined the cast earlier this month--plus Brendan Gleeson and Lady Gaga, and returning stars Joaquin Phoenix and Zazi Beetz.
Production on the Joker sequel is expected to begin in December, and the film is slated to arrive on October 4, 2024, so more details will undoubtedly come out along the long road over the next two years.
Joker: Folie à Deux brings back director Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the script for the sequel with original writer Scott Silver. It's been reported that the sequel takes place in part in Arkham Asylum and has musical elements, though not much else is known about the plot.
Regarding its supposedly musical nature, some believed it would be a full-on musical, but Variety reported that it is more akin to A Star is Born, in that it will have some musical elements but is not a traditional musical. As for Phoenix, he is reportedly being paid $20 million to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime.
2019's Joker was a huge surprise success, bringing in more than $1 billion at the box office. Phoenix earned an Oscar for his portrayal of the title character.
