John Cena is the latest athlete to be added as a playable character in PGA Tour 2K23.
2K Sports announced that the WWE superstar will be added to the game on April 7.
He’ll join former basketball legend Michael Jordan and current NBA star Steph Curry as the latest celebrity non-pro to be included in the game.
Perhaps deliberately, Cena arrives on the same day that EA will be releaseing EA Sports PGA Tour, its first officially licensed PGA Tour game in eight years.
2K says more content will be coming to PGA Tour 2K23, including playable pro Nelly Korda, the Spyglass Hill Golf Course, the Pinehurst No 2 course, Eastside Golf gear and Barstool Sports Fore Play Podcast playable golfers.
EA’s rival title arrives on April 7 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Announced in March 2021, EA Sports PGA Tour is the publisher’s first major golf game since it stopped using the licence in 2015.
The game has been in development at Madden studio EA Tiburon and was originally due to release in Spring 2022 before EA announced a year delay with little explanation.
It will feature 28 real courses and two fantasy ones at launch, each of which has been created using EA’s Frostbite graphics engine.
Previously, EA had published PGA Tour games between 1990 and 2015. 16 of these were endorsed by Tiger Woods before the partnership ended for its last game in the series, 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.
In 2020 rival publisher 2K Sports published PGA Tour 2K21, and followed this up with PGA Tour 2K23 in October 2022. Last year it also announced a long-term partnership with Tiger Woods.
