South Park has reached a new level of international exposure as the popular animated show hits a new milestone in its reach with the latest development in its distribution model for international markets under a new plan by Paramount Global.
South Park has been a major force in the entertainment industry since its debut in 1997, growing over time to become a household name in adult animated shows and branching out to become a multimedia franchise with tons of products, Including a long list of South Park video games. In addition to being wildly popular in the US, the show has also increasingly been making waves in international markets as a part of popular culture via memes and video games, as well as the show coming up in public discourse on social issues and celebrity slander.
The show entered 2024 with much the same buzz as prior years, with announcements like Xbox giving away 4 South Park-themed Series X consoles recently being overshadowed by one big announcement from Paramount’s international team. As covered by The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Global has announced plans tolaunch a plethora of South Park-themed channels in international markets to spread the show’s oft-inappropriate humor and commentary even further. Paramount Global is doing this through Pluto TV, an ad-based streaming platform for international markets. This new plan is currently aimed at existing content, with no indication of what it means for future episodes. Kat Kowalski, senior vp of international content strategy & acquisitions at Pluto TV, also gave a statement concerning the new move.
