It was rumored that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max would be available in both the 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM versions, but according to the latest information, Apple has given all of its models a higher memory count, regardless of the storage variant ordered. Unfortunately, the same treatment was not given to the less expensive iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
With the Xcode 15 Release Candidate made available today, MacRumors, with the help of X user @aaronp613, can confirm that there are files showing that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max feature 8GB of RAM, while the non-Pro versions will ship with 6GB. There are a multitude of benefits to having more memory in a phone, and though iOS is praised for its RAM management, there is only so much software optimization that can be done.
With 8GB RAM, the newer models can open up more apps and keep them running in the background for longer periods. We should see the benefits of 8GB RAM in upcoming speed tests, where an iPhone 15 Pro Max is pitted against the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which currently features 12GB RAM. Hopefully, there is also a scenario where Apple’s latest and greatest is matched up against a few Android flagships featuring 24GB RAM.
We found out a few hours ago that both the newly announced ‘Pro’ models share the same battery runtime as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, despite having a more efficient SoC. This unchanged timing may have something to do with the extra RAM chips consuming more power. While the LPDDR5 standard consumes less power, having extra components can sip more energy, negatively affecting battery life, though we will have to confirm if this is the case.
To get extra RAM in an iPhone, consumers will have to spend more in the
