Immortals of Aveum blends first-person shooter and magic, and all of it is set in a new world with its own lore. Ahead of EA and Ascendant Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, there’s a new devblog on writing the game’s lore and narrative roots.
The new Comic-Con cinematic features the protagonist, Jak, getting grilled over a decision he made to return with the Binding Stone, an artifact he was ordered to destroy. The leader of the Immortals, Grand Magnus Kirkan, played by actress Gina Torres, is furious at his disobedience. While Jak believes he made the right decision, calling it the “ultimate weapon”, Kirkan sternly warns that this ancient artifact is something they know little about and that it could mean “weapons from yesteryear that we are absolutely unprepared for”.
Conflict is at the heart of the newly revealed cinematic, and that conflict is steeped in the lore created for Immortals of Aveum. Writer Michael Kirkbride gets the spotlight in a new devblog, talking not just the conflict in the cinematic, but how the lore and narrative foundations came together, character backgrounds, and even the mysterious villain.
The history of the world of Aveum can’t be separated from magic, and this is also the reason for the Everwar, and why Aveum does not know peace. A separate cinematic shows an earlier conversation between Jak and Kirkan. In this one, she shows him how to look and how to see the magic all around. Here, we also get to see how the Everwar unfolded, and what it means when you are the last known nation to still be fighting against collapse.
