A rough notion of the size of the map in the DLC for has been revealed, hinting at how much players will have to explore once the extra content is made available later this year. The DLC was announced back in February 2023, around a year after the base game’s successful launch in 2022. At the time, the expansion was revealed along with some key art, featuring a blonde character mounted on a Spirit Steed with a darkened Erdtree in the distance. Little else was known about the highly awaited DLC following the announcement.
After nearly a year of silence from developer FromSoftware, it finally showcased DLC’s trailer. The short video highlighted new weapons, abilities, and, most importantly, the new enemies that players will face when exploring a brand-new region. Portions of the area can be seen in the gameplay trailer, but they are not the focus, as the video mostly showcases the new features added to the gameplay sections that can be carried over to the base game. The DLC’s first trailer also revealed the release date for the expansion and pre-order bonuses.
As was announced on the official website, the DLC will be set within a new area called Land of Shadow. This location is said to rest under the shadow imposed by the Erdtree – thus giving the expansion its name. This area is completely new and has not yet been explored, though it is related to the Lands Between and the overall journey that Miquella took when pursuing the trail left by the goddess Marika. The Land of Shadow will likely answer a few lore-related questions while offering new mysteries that players may ponder.
In the new area, players will meet and battle Messmer the Impaler, a new character that seems to be related to Marika.
