A new Xbox devkit was rated in South Korea yesterday by the National Radio Research Agency. It's unclear what this console is, but there are a couple of possibilities, such as the leaked all-digital Xbox Series X and separate handheld.
As per FTC court documents, Xbox at least planned to make these two consoles at one point. Sony recently dipped its toes into the market with the PlayStation Portal, and Valve has had huge success with the Steam Deck. We've even seen Asus and Lenovo try their hands at breaking into the growing market. It would certainly make sense of Xbox to try to do the same, especially with its "play anywhere" motto.
It's worth noting that Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that "so much has changed" since the plans in the leaked documents, so it's unclear if either of these consoles will see the light of day.
The mere idea of an all-digital Xbox has fans worried that it will mark a further push away from physical media, risking damage to preservation as we see digital storefronts shut down and online exclusives made unavailable. However, the Series S is already digital only and PS5 likewise has a cheaper alternative without a disc drive.
As reported by Games Horizon, this "XDK Console" (an Xbox Development Kit) is undergoing testing and is being manufactured in China and Vietnam like with other Xbox hardware. It could be one of the two leaked consoles, or it could be a mid-gen refresh as Sony is reported to be doing with the PS5 later this year.
According to reports, a PS5 Pro is rumoured to be launching this holiday season. While it's said to have the same CPU as the base model, it will reportedly have a more consistent frame rate at 4k resolution with a new performance mode for 8k, as well as improved ray tracing and 33.5 teraflops. Xbox might be gearing up to do something similar, but until an official announccement, we can only speculate.
