Originally announced back at Gamescom 2022, dark historical fantasy RPG Wyrdsong’s developer, Something Wicked Games, seems to be the most recent studio to suffer mass layoffs.
Wyrdsong was announced as being in pre-alpha, along with a splashy and suitably dark teaser at the time. The studio was co-founded by 15-year Bethesda vet Jeff Grdiner and 15-year Bethesda vet Charles Staples, and former Bethesda dev Ekram Rashid, who clearly have some real knowledge of the RPG world. Even with that level of experience, the games industryis a tough one, and it seems like even moreso in the past year, when many projects and studios have been trimmed or outright ended.
The reports come via Game Developer, which cites several now-former employees’ LinkedIn updates, including one from Eric Webb, a senior animator who shared that most of the staff had been laid off. Other affected employees also confirmed their fates.
This makes it unclear what will come of Wyrdsong, which was described at the time of its announcement with: “Players will be challenged to question both their reality and the choices they make as Wyrdsong is set to expand, question, and re-define aspects of what makes up the current Role Playing Game genre”.
While the indicators seem to point to an extensive layoff, the studio itself may still live on, though we’ll have to see if there are any statements on their future direction or on Wyrdsong itself.
