Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead are still fighting the good fight against the game's servers, working hard to improve them after the game was descended upon by a lot more players than initially expected. Ever since launch, the Helldivers 2 servers have struggled and strained with the game's ever-growing player base and popularity, with Arrowhead going so far as to set a limit on how many people can play at once to try and steady the ship.
It's resulted in many people struggling to actually play the game when they try to log in, and so many are being negatively affected that Helldivers 2's user rating on Steam recently dropped to "Mixed" due to so many complaints. You'll find many people advising against buying the game right now as they're stuck in queues all the time, and it's a sentiment that has been shared by the game's own creative director.
In response to someone claiming they can't afford to buy Helldivers 2 due to a lack of funds, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt replied by urging them to wait and buy it later (thanks IGN). In Pilestadt's view, they think that it's currently "worth waiting" for the team at Arrowhead to get the servers in a place where they can comfortably support the capacity of players required, and that he'd be heartbroken if he spent money to be "stuck in server queues".
That's a very odd position to take as Arrowhead's CEO, and even Pilestedt himself admits that he should want the game to be "as profitable as possible". It speaks volumes about the studio's focus on player enjoyment though, as Helldivers 2 continues to be a live service game that bucks pretty much all the predatory practices adopted by others in the genre.
Hopefully, the server problems will be fixed soon, so this poor fan can grab Helldivers 2 and join the fray.
