Almost nine years since Arrowhead Game Studios released a new title, Helldivers 2 has become a resounding success for the studio just days after its release. With around a million copies sold and 360K concurrent users between PC and PlayStation platforms, gamers have been flocking to the sci-fi co-op shooter in droves, dethroning God of War as Sony’s biggest launch on Steam.
The game’s rapid success blew through Arrowhead’s estimates and resulted in some nasty server issues over the weekend. The amount of concurrent users breached the game’s provisioned 250K concurrent user limit, leading to login issues and eventually issues with progression tracking as well. The studio put out a statement outlining what was going on and reassured players of the team’s efforts to make things right.
Arrowhead’s been working on the issues over the past few days, performing server maintenance a number of times, and deploying and then rolling back a patch due to performance degradation. That same patch was rolled out to PS5 players last night as the studio doesn’t expect performance degradation on that platform. As of this writing, Arrowhead is investigating the performance related issues with the PC version of the patch.
It's been a bumpy few days, but it appears that players are rolling with the issues as the game reached a new all time peak of 196K concurrent users on Steam just yesterday.
Helldivers 2 is out now on PC and PlayStation 5.
