Everyone loves free stuff, right? Free gifts on the front of a magazine, free gifts from your favourite streamer, free gifts in cereal (well, before you couldn’t be trusted not to eat them). Epic Games Store seems to really be a storefront based entirely on this premise with my personal amount of logging in purely made up of adding whatever free games are available to my account. This week sees a stone-cold classic of the RTS genre coming to Epic Games Store for free in the shape of Homeworld Remastered Collection. It’s going to be available for this unbelievable price starting from this coming Thursday, the 27th of July until the 2nd of August.

Homeworld 2 Remastered Edition
Homeworld Remastered Multiplayer Beta (The beta features crossplay between Steam and Epic Game Store so players can join their friends wherever they play Homeworld)
Bonus content including Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic
Now, there’s got to be some reason for launching the game for free beyond the generosity of Epic’s heart, and that has to be the forthcoming release of Homeworld 3, which is all set to appear on a PC near you in February 2024. Stefan was lucky enough to go hands-on with an early version of the game last year as well as catch up with Game Director Lance Mueller who said, “There’s a certain tone with Homeworld in general and we want to stay within that, especially coming up with the story, we’re trying to think of how to be fresh, but it’s also a video game and you can’t have everything at the beginning. So we have to think of inventive ways of getting to that power escalation that RTS’ always have.”
