Indie MMORPG Embers Adrift is celebrating one year today, kicking off its anniversary celebrations with streams, as well as free access for all players for the next few weeks.
Embers Adrift launched a year ago now, bringing the old-school, social MMO to players looking to recapture some of what made MMOs great in yesteryear. Developed by indie dev Stormhaven Studios, the MMO had its fair share of stumbles ahead of its launch, with the rebranding from its original name Saga of Lucimia, the departure of the studio founder, and much more.
However, the MMO has now welcomed players to its world over the last year, though it has undergone quite a few changes even since then. The most notable change was the revamping of the business model from a subscription-required model to a buy-to-play format. We've also seen a lot of content added to the MMO, from new dungeons, quests, and much more.
Today's anniversary event kicks off weeks of celebrations, with streams with the developers today, dice duel tournaments tomorrow, as well as a naked race to the Highland Hills, and much more. Over the course of the next three weeks, there will also be periodic GM events, from combat to hide-and-seek challenges. Most notably, the subscription fee has been waived for this period, giving returning and new players a chance to check out the full experience without dropping a dime.
Embers Adrift staying afloat as a small indie game over the last year shows that there is an appetite for slower, more methodical MMO gameplay that requires grouping and social bonds to progress, and it'll be interesting to see how the MMO goes from here. You can catch some of the anniversary stream on CM Elloa's channel in the embed below.
