The Lands Between is a dangerous place where everything wants to kill you. Going for a leisurely stroll can result in a horrific death even if you stick to the relatively safe parts of the map. Even when there isn't some grotesque creature trying to smash you to bits and feed you to its children, there's Varre, who is equally brutal in pointing out that you're maidenless. Even the one bit of affection you get from Fia acts as a debuff.
Just when you think there's nowhere to turn after getting sliced to bits by Malenia for the fifteenth time, it turns out that there's actually a friendly dog in Elden Ring. Usually, these dogs – Rotten Strays, as they're called – roam in packs and jump out of nowhere to ruin your day. But it seems that there's one who is a legitimate good boy. As pointed out by dFOXb, there's one dog in the north-eastern part of Leyndell that doesn't attack you unless you attack first. In fact, you can even use gestures to pet him (thanks GameRant).

The comments section was overjoyed to learn that there's a friendly beast in The Lands Between that you can pet – sort of. However, there were some who were utterly confused, as all they saw was a tortoise. Unfortunately Torrent is the only other friendly animal in the game, and there's no real way to pet him, considering he appears and disappears from directly under you.
