Fans of the first Dragon's Dogma have been quick to point out just how similar Dragon's Dogma 2 seems to be when compared to its predecessor. Indeed, it's clear that the upcoming sequel isn't straying too far from the gameplay formula that made the original title so beloved — but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
In our preview that we wrote earlier this year, we suggested that Dragon's Dogma 2 almost feels like the game that director Hideaki Itsuno wanted to make all the way back in 2012, but couldn't because of budget, resources, time, hardware limitations — whatever. And now, it sounds like Itsuno himself is backing that theory.

On the PlayStation Blog, he makes this point pretty clear, writing: «Dragon’s Dogma is a game that I dreamed of playing as a boy who loved TRPG-based games and action games, and I have a special attachment to it. Dragon’s Dogma 2 incorporates ideas that were not technically feasible at the time we created the first game.»
The first game was, of course, originally released on the PS3 — a console that was already fairly old at the time Dragon's Dogma arrived.
Itsuno continues: «I believe this game will let you experience the fantasy world you’ve always dreamed of, a fantasy world action simulator game, and ultimately be the ultimate Dragon’s Dogma.»
Big words from the legendary developer, but honestly, given his and Capcom's track record, we're inclined to believe that Dragon's Dogma 2 could well be a special experience. Here's hoping it all comes together when the adventure begins in March 2024.
